Model 805-SG 20 GHz Microwave Signal Source

Compact, low-phase-noise microwave signal source covering 100 kHz to 20 GHz. A battery-capable, drop-in replacement for NI FSW/FSL and obsolete QuickSyn synthesizers.

Specifications drawn from Model 805-SG datasheet v104. Some values marked (verify).
Berkeley Nucleonics Model 805-SG compact 20 GHz microwave signal source

1Overview

The Model 805-SG is a compact microwave signal source that delivers low phase noise and fast switching across a wide span, from 8 kHz up to 20 GHz. A high-stability OCXO anchors the output, and the calibrated, phase-lockable signal makes the unit a practical drop-in where a benchtop generator is too large or too costly.

It serves as a direct substitute for National Instruments FSW and FSL sources and as a drop-in replacement for the obsolete QuickSyn synthesizers. The package is small enough to embed in automated test equipment, yet it supports portable battery operation for field deployment.

2Key Features

  • Microsecond switching. Fast frequency switching for agile test sequences.
  • Low phase noise and low spurs. Clean spectral output across the band.
  • Portable battery operation. Field-ready in a compact form.
  • Low level-error accuracy. Power-calibrated output.
  • Compact RF source. 7.0 x 5.0 x 1.0 inch footprint at 2.2 lbs.
  • High-stability OCXO with accurate, phase-lockable output signals.

3Frequency & Output Power

The Model 805-SG covers 100 kHz to 20 GHz, with the lower edge extended to 8 kHz when the 8K option is fitted. Frequency resolution is 0.001 Hz. Leveled output power spans -20 to +16 dBm with 0.01 dB resolution.

ParameterValue
Frequency range100 kHz to 20 GHz (8 kHz with option 8K)
Frequency resolution0.001 Hz
Output power range-20 to +16 dBm
Power resolution0.01 dB

4Phase Noise & Spectral Purity

SSB phase noise measured at 1 GHz:

Offset from carrierSSB phase noise (1 GHz)
10 Hz-87 dBc/Hz
1 kHz-133 dBc/Hz
Verification notes. The product page states a low spurs level but does not publish exact harmonic or spurious values. Both are marked (verify) in Section 7.

5Modulation

The Model 805-SG provides pulse modulation, internal or external, when the PULSE option is fitted. The base unit is a clean CW source; add the PULSE option where pulsed stimulus is required.

Pulse (internal / external)Option PULSE

6Frequency Switching & Sweep

Standard switching speed is 500 microseconds. With the FS option, switching drops to 20 microseconds for fast frequency-hopping. Frequency, power, and list sweeps support automated measurement.

ParameterSpecification
Switching speed (standard)500 µs
Switching speed (option FS)20 µs
Sweep modesFrequency, Power, List

8Interfaces & Form Factor

The Model 805-SG is a compact module measuring 7.0 x 5.0 x 1.0 inches at 2.2 lbs. Remote control runs over Ethernet, SPI, and USB 2.0, which suits both rack-based ATE and embedded host integration. The high-stability OCXO and phase-lockable output let the unit slot into synchronized multi-source systems.
