MetRad 1 Radiation and Metal Detector

A dual-function scanner that finds both metal and radioactive material in one pass. The MetRad 1 is small and light enough for fast baggage and personnel screening, yet sensitive enough to flag heavily shielded nuclear material.

MetRad 1 radiation and metal detector

1Overview

The MetRad 1 gives inspectors a dual-function scanner for fast localization of both metal and radioactive material. The device is small and light, so an operator can sweep baggage and people quickly without fatigue. Sensitivity stays high even when the threat is heavily shielded nuclear material, the case where a single-purpose detector often comes up short.

An efficient CsI detector with SiPM readout drives the radiation response, paired with rugged construction for daily field use. Auto-calibration and a choice of disposable or rechargeable batteries keep deployment quick. When the device alarms, dual LED indicators and two distinct tones tell the operator whether the cause is metal or radiation, so the response is immediate and unambiguous.

Verification notes. The live product page publishes only shipping dimensions and shipping weight in tabular form, both reproduced in Section 4. The following values are not enumerated on the page and must be confirmed against the MetRad 1 datasheet PDF before release: gamma energy range, dose rate range, radiation sensitivity, metal-detection specifications (target size and range), battery type and life, operating temperature, ingress rating (IP), and any certification. Each is marked "verify" below rather than filled with an assumed figure.

2Key Features

  • High sensitivity for both radiation and metal in a single handheld unit.
  • Self-calibrating to different backgrounds for reliable response as conditions change.
  • Rugged and lightweight construction suited to repeated daily scanning.
  • Sound and vibration alarms, with dual LEDs and two tones to separate radiation from metal.
  • Detects heavily shielded nuclear material that gamma-only screening can miss.
  • Disposable or rechargeable battery options for fast deployment.

3Detector & Performance

Radiation detection uses an efficient CsI scintillator with SiPM readout, chosen for strong light output and a rugged, compact package. The SiPM keeps the detector small and shock-tolerant while preserving the response needed to catch weak or shielded sources during a walk-by.

The MetRad 1 distinguishes a radiation alarm from a metal alarm through dual LED indicators and two different alarm tones, so the operator knows at once what triggered the device. Auto-calibration adjusts to the local background, which matters when an inspector moves between a quiet checkpoint and a high-traffic hall. Detailed sensitivity, energy range, and metal-detection figures are not published on the product page and are flagged for verification in Section 4.
